Get a piece of paradise in Loreto, one of the two Magic Towns in Baja California Sur. A small city surrounded by Sierra Giganta and the Sea of Cortez, which makes it a spot filled with beautiful spaces for rest and fun on the beach and on land.
HOW TO GET TO LORETO?
Loreto is located north of the Baja California Peninsula, at a distance of 360 km from La Paz. The easiest way to get here is by plane, take a flight to La Paz and then arrive by land to Loreto, the drive lasts approximately 4 hours.
A TOWN FILLED WITH HISTORY
Loreto was a difficult territory to explore for Hernan Cortes, who was never able to found a colony due to the geographical location and hostile behavior of the natives.
This changed until 1697. A Jesuit mission was established to evangelize the ethnic groups of the region of Baja California Sur, and the place to carry it out was Loreto. Thanks to the success of the mission, it was possible to continue with the evangelization of the rest of Baja California Sur.
WHAT TO VISIT?
OUR LADY OF LORETO
One of the most important tourist spots and also an icon of the Jesuit missions that took place in these territories is Our Lady of Loreto. It was the first architectural settlement in the Baja California peninsula.
If you love eco-tourism experiences this is the right place for you. Coronado Island is the closest island to the magical town of Loreto, located approximately 8 miles away. Here you can sunbathe and relax on the beautiful crystal clear beaches of the island. This is a destination you can’t miss.
CANIPOLE CAVE PAINTINGS
The nomads who lived in the area of Baja California Sur, managed to leave a legacy on the rocks through their striking paintings. Discover these archaeological treasures just 52 miles from Loreto.
SAN JAVIER MISSION
The San Javier Mission represents the great evangelization that existed in Baja California Sur by the Spanish missionaries and was the second to be built after beginning the evangelization. It’s one of the few missions that remains intact and it’s definitely worth the visit.
Also known in Spanish as “Pueblos Mágicos”, Magical Towns are an initiative by the Mexican Secretary of Tourism to promote towns that have a special charm and can offer visitors a “magical” experience.
One of the main requirements to be a part of this list is to offer cultural richness, traditions, gastronomy and natural beauty. It is worth mentioning that capital cities are not part of this program, only non-bustling towns that meet the aforementioned requirements.
Since 2006 Todos Santos has been part of the 3 magical towns in Baja California Sur.
Art is something that attracts tourists and locals to Todos Santos, this town is filled with many well-known painters, actors and sculptors. You’ll be able to find a great variety of galleries and murals.
There’s something special about this place that brings artists together, many say it’s the light and the landscape that resemble an oasis.
You can easily find pristine beaches within a 30 minute drive of Todos Santos, although they are difficult to access it’s a trip that’s worth the while. Some of the beaches you must to visit are Los Cerritos, San Pedrito, Las Palmas and Punta Lobos.
Please consider the currents and waves can reach up to 15 foot or more, we strongly recommend not to swim in these beaches if you are not a surfer.
NATURE AT ITS FINEST
Outdoor activities are a must if you really want to live the Baja experience, there is a lot to do, from eco adventures and whale watching to hiking and surfing, it’s your choice to make.
